Advocacy in the Education System

I have been fighting for my son to be included in the Education system since he was in Kindergarten. He will now be going into Grade 10. For the most part, school has been nightmare for him. He was kicked out of Kindergarten the first week because he was so hyper and couldn't feel his body and their movements and functions.

For the last eight years he has not been able to engage in regular classrooms. It is too overwhelming and he has sensory processing delay. I have been called almost everyday to go in or pick him up. I had to resign for my job. It was all too much for both of us.

I fought for supports and received them. I found that even when he had supports, the school had no idea how to address his needs. Calls were coming in everyday. Then the bullying started and that came with a whole slew of new issues.

He's been in a Developmental Disability classroom since Grade 7. This has been good for him academically but not socially.

I have tried to address these issue by creating a petition for an FASD classroom which was largely ignored by the school board.  https://www.gopetition.com/petitions/petition-for-an-fasd-classroom-in-the-peel-district-school-board.html

I have since created a proposal for an FASD classroom. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1U_TRMXx9ESXKc5TblHWbd_EFYWPM2D5jPG6iUTJigmk/edit?usp=sharing

The proposal was reviewed and I was told that parts of it would be included in the new learning hubs and students with the same "profile" as my son would be in his classroom. I will follow up and keep the website updated in regards to this in the Fall/Winter of 2025.

Indigenous Land Acknowledgement

We would like to acknowledge that the land on which we live, work and gather, and on which the Region of Peel operates, is part of the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit. For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples inhabited and cared for this land. In particular, we acknowledge the territory of the Anishinabek, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Ojibway/Chippewa peoples; the land that is home to the Metis; and most recently, the territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation who are direct descendants of the Mississaugas of the Credit. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land, and by doing so, give our respect to its first inhabitants.
